Riverbend/Peaks Primitive Camping
Riverbend Primitive Camping
Riverbend is canoe-in or backpack-in only and reservations are required one day in advance. Call 1-877-722-6762 or go to ncparks.gov/new-river-state-park/home or reserveamerica.com. Located 1.25 river miles from Wagoner Canoe Access or 3.5 miles from the backcountry parking lot. Four primitive campsites are located at two landings. A and B primitive sites. There is no vehicle access. Six persons per site. Twelve persons per Landing.
Peaks Back-country Primitive Camping
The Peaks are backpack-in only and reservations are required one day in advance.Call 1-877-722-6762 or go to ncparks.gov/new-river-state-park/home or reserveamerica.com.Sites are labeled and hiking distances are indicated on the map. The sites offer a rock fire ring, no pit toilet, and no vehicle access. Six persons per site. A maximum of twelve people is allowed at the group site.
Rules and tips:
Firewood should be from local vendors or from a certified treated firewood source to limit the spread of tree diseases and insect pests. Campers may use dead and downed wood. Always keep fires small and attended.
Jeep Roads:There are many old “jeep roads” in the Peaks backcountry. You are welcome to explore but remember they are not maintained or marked trails. A good GPS device is required.

Water: Pack in, boil, or treat all water. Take water from creeks or springs. Never drink water from the river, even if it is treated.
Safety: Remember Safety first. You are entering a remote area. It could take more than an hour for rescue to be able to reach you. Pay attention to the weather. Storms can move in fast. Know your limits when planning the days hike.
Pets:Must be on a leash shorter than 6 feet even in the backcountry.
Food: Secure food in a bear proof container or hand properly from a tree. Although it is possible to see a bear in the area, raccoons are more frequently a problem.
Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from any wildlife you encounter. We are the visitor in their home. All Plants and animals are protected in your State Parks.Toilets: Use Pit Toilets where available. If they are not available, dispose of human waste properly: The use of carry-out WAG bag (waste alleviating gel) is preferred. Otherwise, dig 10-inch cat holes 300 ft. from the river, a creek, or campsites. Carry out used paper in Ziploc bags.
