Description

Nestled in the heart of Cumberland State Forest in central Virginia's Cumberland County, Bear Creek Lake State Park offers the amenities of the larger parks without the crowds. Activities revolve around the 40 acre lake with a boat launch, swimming beach, lakeside picnicking, cabins, camping and hiking trails. Only non-gasoline powered boats are allowed on Bear Creek Lake.

The park is surrounded by the 16,000 acre Cumberland State Forest, which provides opportunities for a wide range of outdoor activities. Four small lakes in the state forest are managed by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for recreational fishing. A network of gated and non-gated forest roads provides hiking, mountain biking and nature observation.

Notice for Campers

LEAVE YOUR FIREWOOD AT HOME!!
A firewood quarantine has been established for the following localities: counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Louden, and Prince William; and the entire cities of Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. It is unlawful to transport firewood from these localities. In general, firewood can harbor insect pests under the bark and in the wood. The transport of infested firewood has been identified as a leading cause in the introduction of harmful forest insects into un-infested forest areas. Help us keep our state parks pest free by leaving your firewood at home.

The park is about 4.5 miles northwest of the town of Cumberland. From U.S. Route 60, go west on Route 622 and south on Route 629 to the park entrance.

  • Between Aug 14 to Labor Day each year, many of our parks that offer swimming may experience a shortage of qualified lifeguards, resulting in swimming being available on Saturdays and Sundays only (closed Monday-Friday). Swimming is available Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend. If your park trip depends on swimming daily, we advise you to reserve at another time. We apologize for the inconvenience. There is no refund to overnight guests when swimming is not available from Aug 14 2008 to Sep 01 2008
  • Pursuant to Code of Virginia, no fire of any sort is permitted, including charcoal, between February 15 and April 30, except between the hours of 4PM to midnight. This includes campgrounds and picnic area / cabin grills. Camping stoves that are self-contained are permitted (ex. Coleman Stove). from Feb 15 2009 to Apr 30 2009
