Description:

Heckscher State Park has more than a million visitors a year. Twenty miles of trails attract hikers, bicycle and cross-country skiers. Swimmers can use the Great South Bay or the swimming pool complex. There are picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, playing fields, playground and 69 camp sites.

Geography:

Heckscher State Park is located on the south shore of Long Island, in Suffolk County, 50 miles from Manhattan.

Recreation:

Activities include biking, boating, fishing, hiking, swimming in the pool, and wintertime cross-country skiing.

Facilities:

The park has a beach, boat launch sites, campsites with showers and dumping stations, a playground, picnic tables, a swimming pool, pavilions, a nature trail, and playing fields.

Historically at this time of year, West Nile Virus becomes present in this park causing the park to close for the safety of all visitors. Since this can change at any time with no advanced warning, camping is currently open to walk up visitors only - no reservations are being accepted. Any previous reservation due to arrive from July 25th, 2008 or later has been cancelled and fully refunded. If you plan to go to Heckscher as a walk-up you can call 1-866-987-2267 before 5:00 PM for the latest status. If you plan to arrive later than 5:00 PM you should call the park before you go.

To insure fairness for all NY customers, any reservation with departure dates outside the 9-month Maximum Window can not be changed or cancelled until 18 days after the reservation was made.

  • The camper must be 21 years of age or older to reserve and occupy a site
  • Each site has a maximum of two tents per site and 6 people.
  • Campers must check in and set up by 9 p.m. or risk losing the reservation.
  • There is a 14-day maximum stay at the park. After 14 consecutive days camper must leave for 48 hours.
  • Maximum of 2 vehicles allowed.
  • A second car is not allowed to enter campground to load or unload equipment. The car must be parked in the parking field. There is a fee charged for the second vehicle.
  • 24 hour security is provided.
  • Pets are NOT allowed at the campground.
  • Water spigots are located throughout the grounds.
  • All campfires must be in metal containers above ground (not supplied).
  • No rugs, mats or pools allowed on grass.
  • Quiet hours are from 10pm to 7am.
  • No generators during quiet hours and no vehicles allowed into campground during quiet hours.
  • Campers are not permitted in other areas of the park after sunset.
  • RV's or other vehicles over 12 feet are not allowed due to low bridge on Heckscher Parkway

Swimming is open from last week of June through Labor Day at Saltwater Bay and swimming pool. Boat launch ramp is day use only and has a pumpout station. There are no electrical or water hookups at any site. Each site has a BBQ grill, table and cement pad.

Peak season: A person may be the primary site occupant for 14 total days of camping within a 16 day period. S/he must leave the park for 48 hours once they have stayed the maximum number of days allowed before beginning a new reservation.
