WIDE HOLLOW DAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION 2010: Wide Hollow Reservoir has been drained to reconstruct the Wide Hollow dam. The project began in March 2010 and will continue throughout the year. Recreational use of the reservoir for fishing, swimming and boating will not be available in 2010. Visitors may experience dust and noise due to nearby construction activity.Currently a pump is running 24 hours a day at the construction site. In September construction activity will take place 6 days/week and 24 hours a day.

Description

Escalante Petrified Forest State Park features colorful deposits of mineralized wood. Visitors will enjoy hiking through the petrified forest.

Geography:

In 1872, a member of John Wesley Powell's survey party, Almon Harris Thompson, first explored the Escalante River. He decided to name the area after an explorer named Escalante, which means to escalate upward, like stairsteps, which describes the plateaus surrounding the park.

Recreation:

Guests to this park enjoy hiking, boating, fishing, ice fishing, swimming, wildlife viewing, petrified wood, photography, and camping

Facilities:

The nearby 130-acre Wide Hollow Reservoir provides water recreation and fishing. Off-highway vehicle riding areas are also nearby. The park is an ideal base for trips within the area, including Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. visitor center was built in 1991, and features petrified wood, petrified dinosaur bones, ammonite, and shell fossils

Alerts and Important Information

  • Construction on the Wide Hollow Dam will begin in late February or March of 2010. There will be no access to the reservoir throughout the year. The reservoir will reopen to water activities in 2011. The campground and hiking trails will remain open and relatively unaffected. Please use caution in and around the park as there will be large construction vehicles using the entrance road.

  • It is illegal to gather firewood or remove petrified wood.

  • Please bring your own firewood.
