DescriptionThe Mt. Greylock primitive backpacking camping area offers a car free environment with spectacular views and private wooded sites. The Mt. Greylock primitive camping area can be reached by a 2.5 mile hike from the Hopper Road Trail Head at the base of the mountain. A less strenuous 1.3 mile hike to the camping area is available from the parking lot located on Rockwell Road. At 3,491 feet, Mt. Greylock is the highest peak in Massachusetts. Acquired by the Commonwealth in 1898, it was Massachusetts' first state park. For years, Mt. Greylock has inspired artists and writers, including authors Herman Melville and Henry David Thoreau. After arriving at the summit you may see a panorama of five states. Facility: Mt. Greylock offers a hike-in, car-free camping experience IMPORTANT: MA State Parks prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of MA State Park Campground facilities. Arriving customers must get their firewood at the campground. Firewood is available for $5.00 per bundle. Pricing may vary at campgrounds with camp stores. Transportation of firewood into or out of MA State Park Campground facilities may result in eviction, or substantial fine, or both. Services & Amenities:
Alerts and Important Information IMPORTANT: The United States Centers for Disease Control, DCR's MassParks and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health encourage everyone to be safe outdoors. Diseases associated with ticks and mosquitoes are growing threats in Massachusetts. When outdoors, please take necessary precautions as suggested by the Centers for Disease Control. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts State Parks and Campgrounds. The reservation must be in the name of the primary occupant. To insure fairness for all customers, any reservation with departure dates outside the 6-month Maximum Window cannot be changed or canceled until 18 days after the reservation was made. If you choose to cancel or change your reservation, a $10 fee will be charged. The reservation transaction charge is non-refundable. Cancellations made on the day of arrival must be made by contacting the campground and will result in the loss of the first night's camping use fee plus the $10 cancellation fee. Fees will be deducted from any refunds due or will be added to future reservations. Refunds of $5 or less cannot be processed. If you leave early, please check-out at the contact station. If you are unable to arrive on your scheduled date, you must call the campground. Failure to contact the park by 8 A.M. the morning following your scheduled arrival date may result in your campsite being reassigned to another camper and forfeiture of all fees paid. Getting There:Massachusetts Turnpike (Rte. 90) to Exit 2 (Lee). Turn right onto Rte. 20 to Rte. 7 North towards Lenox and Pittsfield. Follow Rte. 7 North through Pittsfield to the Town of Lanesborough. Take right onto North Main St. Follow signs. Go 1.8 miles to the Visitor Center. Campground parking lot is located on Rockwell Road, five miles from Visitor Center. To Hopper Road Trailhead Parking Take Rte. 7 into Williamstown, turn east onto Rte. 43.
