Robert W. Craig Campground – Jennings Randolph Lake – WV
Rooted within the winding gorge of the North Branch of the Potomac River, lies Jennings Randolph Lake and the Robert W. Craig Campground. This quiet, secluded lake provides an outdoor sanctuary for this region of northeastern West Virginia and western Maryland. The sheer beauty and diverse recreational activities available make Jennings Randolph Lake a highly desired and unspoiled recreation destination.
The Robert W. Craig Campground is spaciously located on the hills above the lake. The 82 campsites range from large open areas to secluded tree surrounded sites offering an intimacy with nature. Located within the parks are 3.5 miles of trails ranging from our one mile long tree identification trail which provides a relaxing walk featuring over 25 species of tress native to this area, and our two mile hiking/biking Sunset Trail offering a panoramic view of the back of the dam and breathtaking sunsets.
The campground located is within one mile of the North Branch of Potomac River, one of the finest trout fisheries on the East Coast. . From a put in point in Barnum, WV a boater can travel down the river seven miles to the take out point. Along the way a boater will travel through an unspoiled, undeveloped area. The river carves through a holler with the Alleghany Mountains rising on both sides of the river. The cold clear water also holds an abundance of trout for anglers to enjoy. On selected weekends the outflow will go up to a 1000 cfs, creating exciting Class III water. The river provides a peaceful escape for everyone who is fortunate to find it, for getting there is an adventure in itself.
Also within a ten minute drive is the Shaw Beach, a sandy beach is two hundred feet long and is gradually sloped into the lake for easy access. The area includes full restroom facilities, including changing stations, playground equipment, and potable water fountains with a foot washing station, and a forty car parking area. Benches are arranged to allow restful moments just watching the lake. The area is available to all visitors at no cost.
The Howell Run Boat Launch is open 24 hours and features parking for 60 trucks/trailers, a two lane lighted boat ramp and courtesy dock. Restroom facilities are available. This will gain you access to the 952 acre lake which affords opportunities for fishing, water skiing, sailing, and personal watercraft. The lake is abundant with walleye, small mouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill.
- Campground has 82 campsites, of which 70 have electrical services. Ten campsites have 50-amp/220 volt service and are 80 foot in length to handle larger RV’s. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern holder.
