Council Grounds State Park Book Now

Council Grounds is a park with something for almost everyone. This 508-acre park along the Wisconsin River in north-central Wisconsin hosts a variety of activities and sights year round Boating, fishing, swimming, and waterskiing are popular here.

The 217-foot beach has an expansive sunning area and picnic area. The best time for swimming is mid-June through mid-August. Lifeguards are not provide.

The Setting

Located along the beautiful Wisconsin River near the site of Native American encampments, Council Grounds State Park is a favorite for water enthusiasts. The park offers many recreational opportunities including wooded trails, beach area, and an accessible fishing pier. A boat landing offers access to Lake Alexander plus there are several areas for shore fishing.

The Facility

Three new outdoor group sites with 2 or 3 paved pads to park no more than 1 wheeled camping unit per pad.
Each pad has a pedestal with 20, 30, and 50 Amp hook-ups.
There is a hydrant on site (this is not a RV hookup).
Please note that this group site has LIMITED privacy.

Group Campground Information

On each site, there is a large grassy area for tents, a centralized fire pit, a water hydrant, and a grill along with several picnic tables. No hoses may be attached to these hydrants; they are for bucket fill-up only.
The fill-up and dump station are located on the left side of the road before the Family Campground (see map); a dumpster and recycling bin are also located there. There is also a dumpster and recycling bin located near the entrance to the Group Campground on the north side of the road.
Vault bathrooms are located near the parking area for Sites A and B and near the parking area for Site C. Showers are available in the Bathroom Building in the Family Campground.
Each pad has a pedestal with 20, 30, and 50 Amp hook-ups.

Family Campground

A heavily wooded 55-site campground is popular with our warmer weather guests. The campground has showers and flush toilets and 19 electrical sites. Each site has a table and fire ring. The campground has a trailer dumping/fill station and recycling containers. Sites can be reserved 11 months in advance online or by phoning (888) 947-2757, or may be occupied on a first-come-first served basis. Reservations are available from late May to Labor Day and are recommended for holidays, weekends and for electrical sites.

Camping Tips

To slow the spread of emerald ash borers and other invasive pests and diseases, visitors may NOT bring firewood onto Wisconsin state parks, forests and other DNR managed lands from:
Outside of Wisconsin
More than 50 miles away from the campground or property
State and federal emerald ash borer quarantined areas, regardless of whether they are within 50 miles of the property. Wisconsin quarantined counties include Ozaukee, Washington, Fond du Lac, and Sheboygan Counties. (To zoom in on details or print this map, open it in PDF format [PDF, 287KB].

Directions

Council Grounds is conveniently located just west of Merrill, a community of about 10,000, and 20 minutes from the Wausau area.
From U.S. Highway 51, exit onto State Highway 64 (Main Street) and go west about 2 miles through downtown Merrill. Turn right on State Highway 107 (Grand Avenue) and go about 1.8 miles. Turn left on Council Grounds Drive and go about .5 mile to the park entrance station..
