Activities and Amenities
The group camp located at the upper end of the Sherando Lake Recreation Area is just above the 7 acre upper lake. The group campsites are located around the outer portion of the loop with a large grass field on the interior of the loop for activities and games. Both the upper 7 acre lake and the lower 25 acre lake are fed by the South Fork of Back Creek as well as a number of natural springs, so the water is cool even in the warm summer months.
Upper Sherando Lake is a fisherman's haven that does not allow swimming. The Lower Lake is ideal for a mixture of swimming, boating and fishing. Fishing licenses are required to fish on either lake.
Many hiking opportunities abound, including the Blue Loop Trail, the Lakeside Trail and the Torry Ridge Trail that heads to Bald Knob.
Fun weekend campfire programs take place at the amphitheater in summertime.
The five tent-only group campsites are located along one loop. Each site can accommodate a maximum of 15 guests, or a large group can reserve all 5 sites to fit up to no more than 75 guests. Each site is delineated with fencing and is equipped with picnic tables, a grill, lantern poles, and a serving table. A bathroom with flush toilets and shower is located at the upper end of the loop and a vault toilet at the lower end of the loop. Drinking water is available at each site.
The nearest groceries and fuel are located in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, about 15 minutes from the recreation area.
A golf course and ski resort with wonderful scenic overlooks are within 10 miles of Sherando Lake.
