Overview

Gator Head Campground is located within the Bear Island Unit of the preserve. It is only accessible by off-road vehicle, foot, or bike. This campground is the ideal spot for hunters and off-road vehicle enthusiasts. A permit is required when using an off-road vehicle.

Natural Features:

This remote campground surrounds a lake offering views from every site. Palm trees line the sites providing minimal shade.

Recreation:

Gator Head offers access to hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, off-road vehicle trails, photography, and birding. Permits are required for hunting, fishing, and off-road vehicle use.

Facilities:

This small primitive campground offers nine tent sites with picnic tables and fire rings. There is no potable water. Vault toilets are available for use. There is one handicapped accessible site available.

Nearby Attractions:

Bear Island Unit offers 20 plus miles of backcountry trails. Everglades City is located 30 miles south and provides dining, sight-seeing, and historical sites. Everglades National Park can also be accessed via Everglades City. Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center is also located 30 miles to the south. The Oasis Visitor Center is located 50 miles to the southeast.

  • Due to the remote nature of this campground food must be stored in a manner as to not attract wildlife.

  • Off-road vehicle use is not allowed in the campground.
  • Pets are not allowed at this campground.
