Overview

This campground boasts a spectacular view of one of the longest extension bridges in the world, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Not far from the campsite is an overlook area which features a vantage point to view the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan Skyline and various forts and batteries in the New York Harbor region. Take a stroll down the boardwalk or bike ride along the beach front where there are food concessions available. There is a Staten Island Ferry that goes to New York City which is FREE of charge.

Natural Features:

Located in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island glacial activity from 10,000 years ago, has left a high point, which is the Overlook area. Hills, fields, Maritime Forest and Dunes, as well as beaches are within the Staten Island Unit.

Recreation:

Fishing off the beach is available for campers. In addition, campers can experience a ranger led tour of the historic structures. In the summer months, campers can stroll the beach at Fort Wadsworth or swim at the guarded beach at our Great Kills Park location. Bird watching, basketball, kayaking and playground areas are within the Staten Island Unit.

Facilities:

A public bus from in and outside Fort Wadsworth (buses stop running at 6:30 p.m. daily, check schedule) takes campers to Staten Island Ferry for a 20-minute boat ride to New York City. From there, street buses, tour buses, taxis and subways are available.
