Bald Knob Lookout Detour: Due to recent storm activity, Forest Service Road #3348 at the junction of #33 is closed. A major slide has occurred and access to Bald Knob Lookout has changed as follows: Bald Knob Lookout is located approximately 25 miles south of Powers and 75 miles South East of Coos Bay. The lookout is maintained by the US Forest Service Powers Ranger District. From the North -The lookout can be reached by driving South from the Powers Ranger District office on Highway 242 through the town of Powers to the forest boundary. Continue on Forest Service Road #33 along the South Fork of the Coquille River for approximately 18.5 miles to the junction of road #3343. Turn left on #3343 and go about 5.4 miles to the junction of road #5520. Turn right and take #5520 and right on #5520-020. Follow this spur road until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and continue through a second gate ending at the lookout. From the South - The lookout can be reach by driving on Highway 595 from Gold Beach to the forest boundary. Continue on the Forest Service Road #33 approximately 19.5 miles to the junction of road #3343. Turn right on to road #3343 and go about 5.4 miles to the junction of road #5520. Turn right and take #5520 and right on #5520-020. Follow this spur road until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and continue through a second gate ending at the lookout.
