Overview

Description

Voorhees State Park served as a camp for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) - Franklin Roosevelt’s program to get people back to work during the Depression. The CCC planted trees and constructed shelters, picnic sites and trails throughout the park. Today, Voorhees is a popular hiking and camping destination.

Geography:

Voorhees State Park is located in the wooded hills of Northern Hunterdon County, two miles north of the town of High Bridge. This 1,040-acre park can be reached from Interstate 78, taking Route 31 North to Route 513 North or from Route 206 to Route 513 South.

Recreation:

In 1965, the New Jersey Astronomical Association built an observatory on land leased from the state. The 26-inch Newtonian reflector telescope is one of the largest privately owned telescopes in New Jersey. The public is invited to explore the night sky at skywatching programs that are offered year round by the NJAA. For further information, visit www.njaa.org .

For campers we offer 47 tent and trailer sites and three shelters with fire rings and picnic tables. We also offer two group camp sites with 50 person capacity each. Composting restrooms and showers are within walking distance. Trailer sanitary station is open April 1 through October 31.

Voorhees has 7 trails that are suitable for a wide range of abilities and interests. All trails in the park are multi-use except the Cross Park Trail and the Parcourse Circuit, which are footpaths only. The trails range from wide and graveled to rocky and steep in places; the parcourse is accessible for people with disabilities.

Several picnic areas with table and grills are located throughout the park. For larger groups, we also offer three reservable picnic areas with shelters. Area A and Area B can accommodate 100 people each. Area C can accommodate 75 people. They may be reserved for a fee. Please call the park office for availability and reservations (908)638-8572.

Hunting is permitted in designated areas within the park and is subject to Division of Fish and Wildlife regulations.

Facilities:

Wooded campsites, composting toilets, hot showers, a trailer dump station, hiking trails, group camping and picnicking make this state park a popular destination.

Nearby Attractions:

Lots to do for outdoor enthusiasts, including a visit to Ken Lockwood Gorge and accessing the Columbia trail section of Patriots Path, the State's longest mountain biking and jogging trail.

Spruce Run Recreation Area, a popular destination for fishing and boating, is short drive away.

New Jersey Astronomical Association Observatory is located within the park.

A short drive away is High Bridge, described as quintessential small town America.
