At the September 1990 dedication of the Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area, then Governor Tommy Thompson described the property as "the jewel of Wisconsin". An apt description considering the state owns 38,000 acres including 114 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline and 195 islands. A total of 66 campsites are available, all of them boat access only. Only 6 group sites are available for reservations, the other 60 are first come, first served.
