Overview

Description

Surrounded by the rolling hills of Hunterdon County, Spruce Run Recreation Area is popular with picnickers, swimmers, fishermen, boaters and campers. The reservoir was one of the first water supply facilities to be constructed and operated by the state and covers 1,290 acres with 15 miles of shoreline for recreation. Spruce Run is the third largest reservoir in the state after Round Valley and Wanaque reservoirs.

For campers we offer 67 tent and trailer sites and three shelters with fire rings and picnic tables. Modern restrooms and showers are within walking distance. Trailer sanitary dump station is open April 1 through October 31.

Several picnic areas with table and grills are located throughout the park. For larger groups, we also offer a reservable picnic area with shelter. This picnic area can accommodate approximately 200 people. It may be reserved for a fee. Please call the park office for availability and reservations ( 908)638-8572.

Hunting is permitted in designated areas within the park and is subject to Division of Fish and Wildlife regulations. Please contact park office for more details.

Geography:

The Spruce Run campground is located on a peninsula in the Spruce Run Reservoir. Several sites are located along the waters edge and many others enjoy a view of the reservoir.

Recreation:

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the park offers a swimming beach staffed with lifeguards. Restrooms and shower facilities are available to the public at this time.

Six picnic areas spaciously located in wooded and open areas overlooking the reservoir. Includes tables, charcoal grills and restroom facilities. For larger groups, we also offer a Group Picnic Area, by reservation only.

The reservoir is a popular destination for motor boating (10hp limit), sailing (30 feet above the water line height limit), canoe/kayaking, and windsurfing. The park has its own boat launch and car-top launch areas. Boat rentals are available seasonally.

Twenty-nine species of fish are contained within the waters of Spruce Run including largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish, yellow perch and carp. Trout, northern pike and hybrid bass are stocked by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife. For fishing regulations please refer to the NJ Fish and Wildlife Digest. www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw

The park offers scenic views and leisurely hiking, including access to the Highlands Trail. From the pathways throughout the park one can enjoy year-round birding.

Facilities:

Waterfront campsites, restrooms with showers, a trailer sanitary dump station, a boat launch, a car-top boat launch, boat rentals, a sandy beach with a bathhouse, and great fishing are just a few highlights that make this recreation area a popular destination.
