    Geography:

National Geographic released a Special Publication in November - 2012 titled "50 of the World's Last Great Places - Destinations of a Lifetime". Our remarkable Jocassee Gorges is one of those places. In the northwestern-most corner of South Carolina is Oconee County, known as the "Mountain Lakes Region" because of its climate, its spectacularly beautiful lakes and the beauty of its Blue Ridge Mountains.

The lake shore is thickly forested with mostly pine, and the lake itself is large with many inlets and coves to explore.

Over 200 species of birds call this area home, including waterfowl, shorebirds, woodland birds and even the occasional peregrine falcon and bald eagle.

    Recreation:

Today, outdoor recreation, adventure travel and family together time are hot buttons for tourists, and Oconee County offers the perfect setting for an affordable vacation for active families, outdoor types of all ages, couples and retirees. Biking, horseback riding, boating, whitewater rafting, paddling, fishing, hiking, camping, golfing and antiquing are plentiful here. Oconee County includes lakes Hartwell, Keowee and Jocassee, rushing and lazy rivers, including the federally-designated Wild and Scenic Chattooga, endless waterfalls, the Sumter National Forest and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, all neighboring the mountains of North Carolina and Northeast Georgia, making it within easy access to most of the Southeast.

On-site recreation amenities includes picnic tables with charcoal grills, swimming area, restroom, four tennis courts, three boat ramps, fishing pier, and two playgrounds. Lake Keowee is over 18,000 acres and provides a pristine, blue reservoir popular for water sports and fishing. Fishing is one of the most popular activities at the lake. Sought-after species include largemouth bass, spotted bass, bream, crappie, and catfish.

The lake appeals to boaters of all kinds, whether their specialty is canoeing, sailing or motor boating. Coves and areas of quiet water provide water skiers with excellent surfaces.

    Facilities:

The campground offers 86 campsites, of which 41 are waterfront. All sites have 20, 30 or 50 amp electrical hookups and water. Other amenities include two bathhouses, playgrounds, picnic area, a swim area and a dump station. There are also two shelters that may be reserved for family reunions, birthdays, or group get-togethers.

    Nearby Attractions:

The Mountain Lakes region offers an abundance of nearby attractions including the Sumter National Forest, Wild & Scenic Chattooga River, world class waterfalls, Stumphouse Tunnel, Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail, a thriving arts community, Clemson University and re-vitalized downtown atmospheres full of shopping and dining.

South Cove is located just minutes from Seneca and ten miles from Clemson, South Carolina and Clemson University, offering additional tourism opportunities, along with grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants.
