Four Sandhill cranes fly low over brilliant yellow marsh marigolds blooming in the prairie basin. Every year, thousands of sandhill cranes migrate to spend the winter at Paynes Prairie.” The 50-foot-high observation tower, located on the edge of a live oak hammock near the Visitor Center, gives a panoramic view of the prairie basin. Often, wildlife, like this family of wild Spanish horses, can be viewed here.” Birdwatchers, nature photographers, and park rangers scan the horizon for wildlife at the platform at the end of the La Chua trail. Located at the north end of the park, this trail provides excellent wildlife and wildflower viewing opportunities.” Hikers on the Rim Ramble trail enjoy a ranger-guided walk through a live oak hammock dotted with sinkholes on the north rim of the prairie basin. This guided walk is offered November through April.” A bicyclist and rollerblader enjoy the Gainesville-Hawthorne trail. This 16 mile long, paved Rails-to-Trails trail is popular with bicyclists, pedestrians, and equestrians.”
