McPherson State Fishing Lake adjoins the 2,574 acre Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, which offers viewing of bison and elk in a native prairie setting. The 46-acre lake is surrounded by 260 acres of campground and public use area. The lake is characterized by a steep rocky shoreline towards the dam and shallow mud flats on the upper end. A boat launch facility is located on the west side of the lake. Boating on the lake is for fishing only. Primitive camping is also permitted and fire rings/grills, picnic tables, and pit toilets are available. For visitors who prefer not to rough it, McPherson State Fishing Lake offers a 16' x 27' deluxe cabin with air conditioning/heat, open to visitors year-round. This cabin is handicapped-accessible. It has one full bathroom, one bedroom with a full size bed, and a futon. In the living area, there is a sofa and a single murphy bed. There is a kitchen complete with stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and filters, toaster, dishes, utensils, and pots and pans. Outside amenities include a covered porch, picnic table, and fire ring. It is a short walk to the water's edge and a hiking trail that starts just south of the cabin. Vehicles are permitted on maintained roads and in designated parking areas. Vehicle permits are not required at McPherson State Fishing Lake.

Alerts and Important Information
A non-refundable reservation fee is charged for each transaction. Reservations must be made at least 3 days prior to arrival. No tent, trailer, or RV camping is allowed at the cabin site. All dishes should be clean and put away. A trash dumpster is located near the west entrance to the lake. Trash should be taken to the dumpster before checking out. Staff will inspect the cabin after you leave and additional charges may be applied for cleaning, missing items, or damages. No pets or smoking are allowed in the cabins The office is not open daily. From Canton: 6 miles north on 27th Avenue(County Road 304). Turn west on Pueblo Road and go 2 1/2 miles to west side of McPherson State Fishing Lake.Cabin is in south end of campground on west side of lake.

From McPherson: 12 miles east on Hwy 56. Turn north onto Hwy 86 (27th Avenue), then follow directions above.

  • Annual fall mountain man rendezvous at visitor center near center of property. Hours are 9am to 4pm each day. Primitive camps, mountain men, flint knapping, blacksmithing, food, bluegrass/western music, and bison herd tours. Fund raising auction on October 8th at 5 pm. from Oct 07 2011 to Oct 09 2011
  • Annual auction of surplus buffalo from the Maxwell Refuge herd . Auction is open to the general public and starts at 11 am at the refuge corrals located south of the tour center; vehicles enter/park at the tour center located at 2565 Pueblo Road. Buffalo burgers and buffalo chili and hot coffee are served at the concessions building. The sale is at an outdoor arena, so dress according to current weather conditions. on Nov 16 2011
