Wildfire Effects: This campground was surrounded by the Rodeo-Chediski fire in the summer of 2002. The area around the campground was severely burned and presents safety hazards, including stump holes and falling limbs and trees. The campground is still forested and trees within the facility have been sprayed with pesticide to help protect against bark beetles. Overview

Lewis Canyon is a group campsite located in the scenic White Mountains region of eastern Arizona. With several amenities and activities, including hiking and horseshoes, the facility is great for family gatherings and other large groups.

Natural Features:

Lewis Canyon Campground is located in a beautiful ponderosa pine setting with a large open field nearby. It sits at an elevation of 6,600-feet in the Apache National Forest. Wild turkeys, elk and deer are often seen nearby.

Summer temperatures can be very pleasant because of the elevation. However, the rainy season often brings afternoon thunderstorms from late June through August. Visitors should come prepared for rain and cool nighttime temperatures.

Recreation:

A variety of recreation opportunities are available from the campground, including hiking, a horseshoe pit, a baseball field and access to the beautiful and extensive White Mountain Trail System for hiking and mountain biking.

Facilities:

Lewis Canyon can accommodate up to 150 guests. The camping area is private and spaced around a large loop for the group to spread out. Vault toilets and a picnic area are provided.

Nearby Attractions:

Visitors can explore endless vistas and take part in many outdoor activities in the surrounding Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, which encompasses 2 million acres of magnificent mountain country in east-central Arizona and New Mexico.
