Photos
Wildflowers flourish in a prairie and a storm brews in the distance. Purple blazing stars, white pipeworts and water cowbanes, yellow and white milkworts, and tawny wiregrasses and bluestems are visible in the prairie. Green palmetto patches and sable palms are on the horizon. Gray clouds accumulate during the summer and create impressive thunderheads. Lightning strikes the ground of the treeless prairie. A visitor kneels in the prairie to capture the butterflies and wildflowers with her camera. Purple blazing star, white rattlesnake master, curly toothache grass, skinny wiregrass, dwarf oak and saw palmetto are plants visible in this photo. The tour guide driving the prairie buggy points out the different responses of plants in relation to recent fires. A trail splits the prairie. The prairie on the right produced a wheat field-like appearance of wiregrass because of growing season fire. A metal trail marker is at the bottom left. A family observes animals and plants while walking the Hammock Nature Trail. The trail meanders through a subtropical hardwood hammock, wetlands, and the edge of a prairie.
