Fort Kearny SRA offers 186 acres dotted with sandpit lakes. In the spring, the world's largest concentration of sandhill cranes and waterfowl gathers in the central Platte River valley. Facilities include electrical and primitive camp pads, showers, dump station, modern restrooms, water at the dump station, picnic tables, grills, shelters, wheelchair-accessible fishing pier, nature trail, non power boating and hike-bike trail.

Fort Kearny SRA boasts excellent camping facilities, eight sandpit lakes for fishing, a swimming beach, nature trails and historical exhibits at nearby Fort Kearny State Historical Park.

Campground Notes
Fort Kearny provides modern and primitive tent camping. There are showers and modern restrooms, plus a trailer dump station. Stately cottonwood trees, some over 100 years old, shade much of the camping area.

Getting There:

To get to Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, you would take I-80 to the Minden exit, 279 south on Hwy 10 for 3 miles. Next, turn west onto Hwy 50A for 3 miles.

Or from the Kearney exit, 272 south on Hwy 44 for 2 miles. Then east on Hwy 50A for 4 miles. Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, is 1 mile east and 1 mile north of the Historical Park.

  • The visitor center will be open each day from 9a.m.- 5p.m. daily for crane viewing and area history. from Mar 01 2013 to Apr 08 2013
  • Bring the family out for a great outdoor experience at the recreation area. There will be fishing lessons, camping lessons, firearm instruction and much more. on May 11 2013
  • Free Park Permit and Fish Day at Lake 6 from 9am-12pm at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area. Learn more about family fun in the outdoors. Bait, poles, cooking, scavenger hunt on May 18 2013
  • There will be 1860's soldiers camp, wood carving and pine needle basket displays along with other demonstrations. . There will be a cannon firing each day at 2p.m. May 25-27, events will go from 9a.m.-5p.m. On May 27, events will be held from 9a.m.- 2p.m. from May 25 2013 to May 27 2013
  • Go back in time and witness the Pony Express at its glory. Actors will re-create the ride with historic depiction. on Jun 15 2013
