Overview

Description

This largest of the Delaware State Parks (over 7,000 acres) was in part the result of William Penn's 1682 declaration of this piece of coastal habitat to be for "the usages of the citizens of Lewes and Sussex County." During World War II this area was used by the military, constituting the harbor defenses known as Fort Miles. The military returned the first portions of this land to the Delaware State Park system in 1964, and completely by 1998. Today visitors can witness both the historical impact and the natural beauty that first moved William Penn to protect this area of the public. This dynamic coastal environment encompasses ocean and bay beaches, maritime forests, tidal salt marshes and the highest dune system between Cape Cod and the Outer Banks.

In addition to camping at the family campground visitors come to Cape Henlopen State Park year-round to enjoy the lifeguarded ocean swimming beaches, fishing from ocean beaches or the bayside Pier, extensive environmental and historical programming at the Seaside Nature Center and the Ft. Miles Historical Area, bird-watching, hiking, playground, biking, or playing a round on the popular disc golf course. The park also has facilities available for organized youth group camping as well as conference and meeting facilities.

Shore Gate Golf Club

Shore Gate is located near the seashore, but is sure isn't a day at the beach. We've had about 60,000 rounds here and nobody has broken par from any tee box, said head professional David Faught in late 2004. We even hosted a Player Ability Test [for PGA professional hopefuls] from the white tees and the low round was 74. What makes the course challenging is the diversity of the golf holes, continues, Faught. Everything is visually intimidating.
