Overview

Overview

There are two Agua Piedra Group Shelters that can be reserved adjacent to the Agua Piedra Campground.

The group shelters and adjacent campground are located along the Rio Pueblo River where visitors can fish, hike, mountain bike, or horseback ride from the group shelters and campground.

Natural Features:

The group shelters are located in a mixed forest of spruce, fir and aspen trees, which provide some shade throughout the day. At an altitude of 8,100 feet, temperatures cool off during even the summer nights.

Recreation:

Two trailheads begin in the area, including a novice trail that is entirely accessible. An intermediate and longer trail is also available for not only hiking, but also horseback riding and biking, and cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

Visitors to the Agua Piedra Group Shelter can also enjoy fishing in the Rio Pueblo River, which is a tributary of the mighty Rio Grande. The river is stocked with rainbow trout and has an accessible fishing dock.

Hiking to Serpent Lake and Cordova Canyon, which are both within 7 miles of the group shelter, are also favorite activities for visitors. Also popular is further exploration of points of interest in the Pecos Wilderness, as well as within the Sangre De Cristos Mountains, the southernmost Rocky Mountain range.

Facilities:

Built in 2008, these accessible group shelters (A and B) are equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. The accessible group shelter "A" can accommodate up to 50 people for overnight camping. Group shelter "B" can accommodate up to 100 people for overnight camping.

Nearby Attractions:

The town of Penasco is about 17 miles from the group shelter. It is a small town dotted with churches and very few services.
