Firewood Alert: The Hoosier National Forest (HNF) has prohibited the possession, storage or transportation on the Hoosier National Forest of any hardwood firewood that originates off the Hoosier National Forest. The exception is downed wood gathered on the forest for firewood, processed lumber that does not contain nails, firewood that has been certified by the USDA APHIS or Indiana DNR, and pine firewood. This is to prevent the spread the Emerald Ash Borer and other exotic insect pests. Many local vendors and large retailers supply certified firewood. Firewood is defined as any part or portion of a tree that has been cut and removed from its original location and is to be used as fuel for heating or cooking in an open pit, grill, fireplace, or stove.
