STAR MEADOWS GUARD STATION, MTStatus: Open year round. Season Dates 1 site(s) found
ALL (1) OverviewThis 2 room historic Forest Service cabin is located 23 miles from Whitefish Montana accessed by a paved road. The cabin is heated by 4 cadet electric wall heaters and an electric woodstove. The kitchen comes complete with refrigerator, oven, microwave, coffeemaker and dishes, pots, pans, and utensils are provided. The cabin sleeps 6 comfortably with 4 single beds and one futon couch that folds into a double bed.An additional bunkhouse has been renovated in 2010 with American Recovery and Reinvestment funds. With two bunk beds, it sleeps four comfortably and is great for kids. During this time, we are offering the bunkhouse with your rental of the cabin at no additional charge to you. The restroom is a wood paneled vault toilet 20 yards from the cabin. The old style well with a hand pump is also located approximately 30 yards from the cabin and water is available approximately April 1st through November 30th. A patio area provides shaded outdoor seating and an outdoor fire pit and picnic table are in the large backyard. In addition, stock is allowed at the site; renters must provide their own highlines and portable feed and water buckets. There are ample hiking, horseback riding, biking, cross country skiing, birding, wildlife viewing, snowmobiling and hunting opportunities in the area. Snowmobiling is not permitted on the cabin grounds. Please refer to the over the snow motor vehicle use maps for designated snowmobile routes and play areas. Pets are allowed, but cleaning up after them is required. This site is an excellent area for large family gatherings with ample room for several recreational vehicles or tents. Prior approval is required for outside camping and an additional fee of $5/night is charged for each camp unit. Please call the district office at 406 758-5204 to make arrangements. Natural Features:The cabin sits in a valley near the foot of Mt. Swaney, providing views of the surrounding forested mountaintops. It is in a section of Flathead National Forest nearest to Kootenai National Forest. A variety of wildlife make its home in the area. Recreation:There is plenty of opportunity for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking in the area surrounding the cabin. In the winter, visitors enjoy cross country skiing and even mushing amid nearly untouched snowfall. Snowmobiling can be enjoyed on designated trails, but is not permitted on the cabin grounds. Facilities:The two-room cabin comfortably sleeps up to six people. It has four electric wall heaters and an electric fireplace for heat, and is furnished with beds and a futon couch. A kitchen is equipped with a microwave, refrigerator and an electric stove and oven. Basic dishes, cooking pots and pans, and utensils are provided.
