Description

Spitler Woods is a 146 Acre forested tract, Sptler Woods State Natural Area is 8 Miles southeast of Decatur and 1/2 mile east of Mount Zion off Illinois Route 121. The Site was named for Ida B. Spitler who donated the land to the state in 1937, preserving for posterity the area's shaded ravines and towering trees. Lincoln Trail Homestead is the site of Abraham Lincoln's first home in Illinois. Wishing to memorialize the beginning of Lincoln's life in Illinois, the Macon County Board purchased the land for the site and transferred it to the state in 1938. The site is located 8 miles southwest of Decatur Illinois, the site is bisected by the Sangamon River.

Alerts and Important Information
  • Shelter Reservations are non-refundable unless the area is closed by the Department, in this circumstance the Site Manager will contact you prior to your reservation date to cancel and issue your refund.
  • A responsible adult (18 years of age or older) from the camping party must register for the party and thereby acknowledge compliance with the rules and regulations of the park for the party.
  • Spiter Woods has 5 pavilions that can be reserved. Lincoln Trail Homestead has 2 pavilions that can be reserved.
