OSBORNEDALE PICNIC SHELTER, CT
DescriptionOsbornedale State Park is located on the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers and is a scenic place in which to enjoy a picnic, take a hike, fish, or even ice skate. However, the park's feature attraction is the Kellogg Environmental Center, well-known for its many program offerings for students, families, and teachers.
Osbornedale State Park is located in the Naugatuck Valley Hills just east of the Housatonic River in Derby and Ansonia. In 1956, Osbornedale State Park was willed to the people of Connecticut by Frances Osborne Kellogg, granddaughter of John W. Osborne, one of the Naugatuck Valley's early industrial entrepreneurs. Numerous separate farms now comprise the 350 acre Osbornedale State Park, an unusually large property in the Derby-Ansonia area.
Activities include field sports, museum tours, hiking, picnicking, ice skating, and pond fishing. The Kellogg Environmental Center offers workshops, exhibits, nature activities, and lectures. Through hands-on programs, families can enjoy learning about nature and the environment. In addition, the Center facilitates CEU-accredited educator workshops on award-winning, national environmental curricula, correlated to state and national curriculum standards. The Center's inquiry-based field studies cover many topics and are appropriate for students in grades four through twelve.
Park facilities include restrooms, an environmental center, a historic home, picnic shelters, and picnic tables.
Nearby state parks include Indian Well State Park, Kettletown State Park, and Kellogg Environmental Center.
