Alerts and Important Information


Alcoholic beverages, firearms (including fireworks) and other weapons are prohibited.
No hookups on sites. No water at individual sites, several spigots in campground.
November - February: 8:00 am - 6 pm; March - May and September - October: 8:00 am - 8:00 pm; June - August: 8:00 am - 9:00 pm. Park office hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm weekdays. Closed state holidays.
Pets are allowed except in park buildings and swim areas, but they must be on a leash no longer than six feet and cannot be left unattended. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. All pets within the park must have a current rabies vaccination.
Owners may be asked to remove dangerous or noisy pets from the park. Posted quiet hours are enforced. Building fires in undesignated areas is prohibited.
Unlicensed vehicles, motorcycles, golf carts, ATV's and mini-bikes are prohibited with the exception of mobility-aid devices used by a mobility-impaired person. All vehicles are prohibited from walkways, trails and other areas not designated for such purposes.



Bikes are permitted only in specifically designated areas. Bicyclists under age 16 must wear a helmet. Bike passengers under 40 lbs or less than 40'' tall must be in a separate restraining seat. All riders must be seated on saddle seats.
Boating & fishing activities are regulated by applicable North Carolina laws & regulations, including those regarding fishing licenses, boat registration & safety requirement. Contact the park office for information. Boats, rafts & canoes are prohibited within designated swimming areas.
Conducting commercial business/activity in the park is prohibited except during special events governed by a Special Activity Permit. Photography or video production for commercial purposes is prohibited except under a Film Permit.
Fires are permitted only in designated areas and must be tended at all times. Gathering firewood is generally prohibited but may be allowed in some parks.
Littering is illegal. Place trash in proper containers. Burying trash is prohibited.
For your safety and protection, please stay on designated trails and hiking areas. Also, many rare plants live on thin soil and wet rocks and are vulnerable to damage from climbing, trampling and scraping.
Metal detectors are prohibited except to locate personal property and users must be accompanied by a park employee. Metal detectors are allowed on sand beaches at ocean parks except during June, July and August.
The removal, destruction or injury of any tree, flower, artifact, fern, shrub, rock or other plant or mineral is prohibited unless with an approved collection permit for scientific or educational purposes.
Bald eagles are protected by law. It is illegal to kill, harass or possess, dead or alive, any eagle or part of an eagle, including feathers or talons. Convictions related to such violations may result in fines as high as $20,000 and imprisonment for one year.
Nesting shorebirds are protected by law. Anyone who harms the birds, nests or chicks is subject to a fine. Do not enter marked nesting areas on foot or by vehicle. Anyone who enters the sites, harms or harasses the birds is subject to a fine.
Loggerhead sea turtles are protected by law. Anyone who harms the turtles, nests or hatchlings is subject to prosecution. Do not enter marked nesting sites on foot or by vehicle.
10:00 pm - 7:00 am. The production or emission of noises, amplified speech, music or other sounds that annoy, disturb or frighten park visitors is prohibited at all times.
State law requires aluminum cans to be placed in recycling containers where available.
North Carolina state park rules and regulations are posted in each park and enforced by rangers. Violating these rules and regulations is a misdemeanor and may result in a fine and revocation of permit.
State parks allow for many special recreational activities such as bicycling events, marathons, photo tours, kite-flying contests, club meetings, etc. However, all such events must be held under a Special Activity Permit. The fee is $35. Contact park office for permit application.
State vehicle and traffic laws are enforced, and the speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted.
North Carolina motor vehicle & traffic laws apply. Unlicensed motor vehicles, including golf carts, unregistered motorcycles, snowmobiles, utility vehicles, mini-bikes and all-terrain vehicles are prohibited. Unlicensed drivers may not operate motor vehicles on park roads.
Motorized vehicles are permitted only in designated areas and not permitted on park trails. All vehicles left in the park after park hours must be registered. No carts, carriages or other horse-drawn apparatus are permitted on park trails.
North Carolina state parks are wildlife sanctuaries; no hunting is allowed and collecting plants, minerals and artifacts is prohibited. State fishing regulations are enforced.
