Site

This is a primitive cabin with no electricity, running water, etc. You must hike your own food and supplies up a steep, one mile challenging trail. There is a seasonal spring and a rain water collection system in place for dishes. A few dishes, pots and pans, Coleman stove and lantern that takes one pound propane canisters will be provided. You have to provide the propane. Pets are permitted. You will be expected to clean up after yourself before you leave. Check in time is between 1;00 pm and 4:30 pm at Lake Francis State Park to obtain combination number to cabin door. The cabin should be cleaned by 10:00 AM and check out is by 11:00 am at Lake Francis State Park. Firewood will be provided. There is spotty cell phone service at the top for emergencies. There are no shower facilities and no running water at site is available at Lake Francis.

Limited seasonal spring with a marked path for water, or carry water up there A rainwater collection system is available for cooking, weather dependant.

Directions on the use of these gas lights and wood stove The cooking utensils in the cabin are expected to be cleaned if used.

Due to the lack of water and hike it is strongly encouraged that camper bring prepackaged foods such as MRE's or the equivalent to eat.

SCENIC VIEWS:
The observation platform of the tower is accessible but not the cab
There is spotty cell phone coverage from the platform.
There is a scenic overlook behind the cabin and that trail will also be marked.

They will check out by cleaning the area up. Visitors should place a refundable deposit incase the area is not cleaned or damage is done to the cabin/facilities.

Car Directions:
Route 3 North, Pittsburg, 4.7 mi., past First Connecticut Lake dam. Take a Right onto Magalloway Road and go 5.3 miles taking a left at the fork, following the signs. You then take a right at the Magalloway tower sign. The tower road is 2.5 miles and will take you to a small parking lot at the foot of the marked trail leading up to the cabin.

Hiking directions:
Two different trails lead to the tower and are designated by signs. Both trails are .7 miles of rough, steep terrain and takes about 40 minutes to climb.

Access:
Visitor will access the cabin using a combination lock box located on the outside of the cabin by the door. They will get the combination by at check in at Lake Francis at. Any questions should be referred to Forest & Lands at (603) 381-3489.

Notes: This fire tower is one of just a few still in use today to watch for potential forest fires. You can climb to the base of the top floor; when it is manned they will allow access to the top, where you can see four counties, and the views are spectacular!

The Ranger District office number is (603) 788-4157. Due to the primitive nature of the cabin, reservations have maximum stay of 2 nights with option to extend through Lake Francis office. You must be at least 18 years old to reserve the cabin. It is equipped with one double bed and one single bed. You should keep in mind that the weather can change rapidly at the top and might not be the same as at the base. Warm clothing is recommended at all times of the year.
