Area

BEACH SWIM AREA

Hammerman Area offers 1500 feet of beach and swimming area on the banks of the Gunpowder River. Lifeguards are on duty at the swimming area from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Swimming is permitted at your own risk when lifeguards are not on duty. Lifeguard hours are subject to change. Call 410-592-2897 to confirm.

No amplified music; NO DJ's permitted.

Moon Bounces: Moon Bounces are permitted but you must contact the Park at 410-592-2897 two weeks prior to arrival date to obtain 'Use Agreement'.

SERVICE CHARGES:

In addition to the Shelter charge, there is a service charge to enter the Park. All visitors are subject to the day-use service charge.

Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekends $5 per person. Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekdays $3 per person. Labor Day to Memorial Day $3 per vehicle. Out-of-State residents add an additional $2 to these charges.

Persons 62 years of age or older WITH Maryland Golden Age Pass and children in car seats are free. Golden Age Pass requires a $10 fee. Information available at: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/goldenage.aspx

Year-Round pet access at Hammerman area; except for sandy portion of beach area.

SHELTER AMENITIES:
ADA Accessible. No pathway from parking lot to Shelter, grassy area. Easy access for caterer. 3 Grills. Drinking water available on site. Electricity 40 amps. Playground nearby. 100 Parking Spaces. No waterview. Next to restroom (ADA Access) and playground. Distance from Shelter to beach swim area approx 1/2 mile.

ALCOHOL POLICY:

The consumption or possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage will be prohibited in all state park areas with the exception of interior areas of full-service cabins, motorhomes, and designated shelters. Permits may be issued upon request by the Park Manager for special events operating under a use agreement.

Alcohol permits will only be issued through a reservation for a designated shelter, or other approved facility. A $35 fee will be charged for each alcohol permit and must be obtained 1-day out prior to arrival. Permits may be revoked for cause by Park Manager, their designee or a Natural Resources Police Officer.

Internet shelter reservations requiring an alcohol permit will need to contact the Call Center at 1-888-432-2267, Mon-Fri, 8 am - 8 pm to make your reservation.

FIREWOOD RESTRICTION:
Due to the potential threat of the Emerald Ash Borer, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has prohibited the importation of personal firewood into all DNR owned and managed properties. Please do not bring firewood with you from home when visiting a DNR property.

PARK HOURS:
The Park is open until Sunset. Check with Park staff for official Sunset time. Visitors using the Shelter must leave by Sunset.

TRASH FREE:
The Park is "Trash-Free". Bring your own large trash bags along with your other picnic supplies. All trash must be removed from the Park. Recycle/Reuse/Reduce.

SHELTER USE & IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Shelter use is by reservation only. Shelter users are responsbile for observing all Park rules, regulations, and state laws. Regulations are posted on bulletin boards and restrooms through the Park. The Shelter reservation may be revoked at any time for violations of these regulations.
  • The person making the reservation is responsible for the following: the Shelter is clean upon leaving; picnic tables are returned to their original location; litter in the surrounding area is picked up; and the conduct of the group.
  • PRICING:
    Prices are subject to change without notice and reservation fees, as well as cancellation fees are non-refundable.

    VEHICLES:
    Vehicles are not permitted at the Shelter area without prior approval of a Park Ranger. If you need to drive to the Shelter to unload supplies, request permission upon your arrival.
