2013 Reservation/Transaction Fees:

In addition to the park facility use fee, there is a nightly reservation/transaction fee. Internet reservations, the per night fee is $4.56. Call Center, the per night fee is $4.61. Walk-In transactions at the park, the per night fee is $4.51. Reservation/Transaction Fees are Non-Refundable.


Cancellation Fee Policy Change-Effective May 1, 2013:

To better serve our Maryland Park Service customers, we are changing our cancellation policy to a reservation cancellation service charge of $6 per reservation; except for Assateague Island State Park, which will remain at $6 per night.

Description

History blended with recreation...This site was once the mountain home of George Alfred Townsend, a Civil War journalist. It features a unique collection of buildings and structures that Townsend designed and constructed, some of which have been restored. A major attraction is a large, stone monument dedicated to war correspondents. The Appalachian Trail traverses this day-use park and passes the monument base. Shelter is available to accommodate up to 100 for gatherings.

Located approximately 7 miles South of Boonsboro. From I-70 West take exit 49 (Middletown). At the light turn left onto alternate Rt. 40. Follow Rt. 40 approximately 11 miles to Rt. 67. Turn Left (South) on Rt. 67 for approximately 7 miles. Turn left on Gapland Road. Follow Gapland Road for approximately 3 miles. Park is on top of the mountain. At fork in road, bear left for parking lot.
