Description

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park boasts abundant opportunities for boating, hunting, fishing, and birding. The large beach at Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the jewel of the park. Fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is excellent in all seasons for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout. Rowboats are available for rental. The park is also home to Fahnestock Winter Park, which includes 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as an area for sledding.

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park covers land in both Putnam and Dutchess counties.

Recreation:

The Taconic Outdoor Education Center provides high quality environmental programming, and the campground's nature center houses environmental displays and a variety of touch boxes. On weekends, park staff lead hikes and craft activities. Movies are shown on Saturday evenings for the enjoyment of all campers. Summer visitors particularly enjoy hitting the beach, boating, fishing, biking, hiking, hunting, picnicking, and camping. Winter visitors sled, snowmobile, ice fish, and cross-country ski.

The park has a beach, boat launch, boat rentals, a nature trail, a bridle path for horses, concessions, a picnic area with tables and pavilions, and showers. The scenic campground, formed along the park's natural rock ridges, provides alcoves of privacy and tranquility. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring.

Each year the campground makes every effort to provide safe swimming opportunities by testing the water and by keeping the swimming areas staffed with lifeguards. Please be aware that if the safety of our swimmers is compromised, due to lack of lifeguard coverage or water quality issues, swimming will be prohibited and therefore cannot be a guaranteed activity. We apologize for this inconvenience as it may occur with little advance notice.

To insure fairness for all NY customers, any reservation with departure dates outside the 9-month Maximum Window can not be changed or cancelled until 18 days after the reservation was made.

  • There are no hookups or dump station at this park.
  • Dogs are permitted on ALL sites. Must be on a leash of no more than 6 feet. Certificate of Rabies vaccination required.
  • Firearms are not permitted at the park.
  • Campers must be 18 years old or older to rent a site. The park will check identification when you check in.
  • Quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. are strictly enforced.
  • Each site is equipped with a picnic table, BBQ grill and fire ring.
  • There is swimming from Memorial Day weekend to 3rd Sunday of June on weekends only. From the 4th Saturday of June to Labor Day there is daily swimming.
  • Looking to reserve for just 1-night? If you make your reservation within 3 days of your arrival you can book a 1-night stay online or through the Call Center. This applies only to campsites.
  • Peak season: A person may be the primary site occupant for 14 total days of camping within a 16 day period. S/he must leave the park for 48 hours once they have stayed the maximum number of days allowed before beginning a new reservation.
  • The interpretive programs, showers, boat rentals, first aid station, beach concession stand are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

From the Taconic State Parkway: Exit at Putnam County Route 301 West. Proceed approximately .25 mile. Park areas are located on both sides of the roadway. From NYS Route 9: Take Putnam County Route 301 East. Proceed for approximately 5 miles. Park areas are located on both sides of the roadway. From Metro-North: Commuter train to Cold Spring Station. Please arrange for taxi service prior to arrival. The park is located approximately 8 miles from the train station, and the cost for taxi service is approximately $20.00. 845-225-7207
