Description

Campsites are nestled among Idaho's largest pinyon pine forest on the east slope of 7,560-foot Smoky Mountain. Restrooms and showers are centrally located.

Campground roads and parking are paved. An RV dumpstation is provided near the entrance.

The campground is conveniently located less than two miles from the visitor center and services in Almo and nearby City of Rocks National Reserve.

Alerts and Important Information

Overnight guests to City of Rocks must pay the entrance fee of $4.00 to use Smoky Mountain facilities.

Campground is winterized during the off season and there is no water available in the campground but electricity is available and fees are reduced.

ADA designated campsites may only be reserved and occupied by a party who can provide proof of disability upon arrival.

All facility charges allow for only one motor vehicle. All other vehicles will be assessed an extra vehicle fee of $5.00 per vehicle per day payable at the park.

Towed vehicles are not considered to be an extra vehicle. Extra vehicle parking is limited. Please check with local park staff on availability and limitations.

Camping is allowed in designated areas only. All boats, trailers, rigs and motorized vehicles must fit entirely within the campsite parking-spur provided.

Any equipment that does not fit entirely within the campsite parking-spur must be parked outside the campground in an area designated by the park manager. If no outside parking is available, a second campsite must be purchased.

Campfires are allowed in designated areas only!

Pets must be kept on a leash. Please check with destination park staff for local restrictions.

Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am.

Fireworks are prohibited in all parks at all times. No Exceptions!

From Boise take I-84 to exit 216 (Declo); go south on Idaho 77 to Conner Creek Junction, then southwest on the Elba-Almo Road.

One half mile south of the visitor center in Almo, turn right (west) onto 3075 South for 500 feet, then turn left (south) onto Smoky Mountain Drive for 1.2 miles to 729 E and campground entrance.

From Pocatello and Idaho Falls, take I-86 and I-84 to exit 216 and proceed as above.

From Salt Lake City take I-84 to exit 245 (Sublett/Malta) then head west toward Malta.

Turn left (south) onto highway 81 for .2 miles to Highway 77, then turn right (west). At Connor Creek Junction, follow directions above toward Almo.

  • Castle Rocks State Park, Magic Valley Astronomical Society, and College of Southern Idaho's Centennial Observatory will host Solar viewing (safe views of the Sun with specially filtered telescopes) 2 pm - 6 pm at Smoky Mountain Campground and Star Party (telescope viewing) 9 pm to 12 midnight at Ranch House site, Castle Rocks State Park. on Jul 17 2009
  • Have you always wanted to climb? Here's your chance. Join Climbing Ranger Brad Shilling for a thrilling adventure up one of the many routes that City of Rocks offers. This one-day event includes climbing instruction, safety awareness, climbing, and lunch. Beginners age 12 and up are welcome to register. Space is limited to 10 participants, and a $10 reservation fee is required on Sep 05 2009
  • Looking for a few hours of scenic beauty from horseback? This ranger-guided trail ride will take participants along the Box Top Trail to dramatic park vistas. The group will rest at Bread Loaves for an "Old West" catered Dutch oven lunch. Participants may bring their own horse or make prior arrangements to rent one from Indian Grove Outfitters in Almo. Reservation is required. Fee $20 on Sep 19 2009
