The lake's calm surface, gentle breezes, and 921 miles of shoreline are ideal for sailing, water skiing or fishing. Heralded as the third most visited lake in the United States, it is especially known for its excellent fishing for crappie, large-mouth bass, catfish, striped bass and hybrid bass. Boat and Jet Ski rentals are available at several locations. Snow skiers find ample opportunity to enjoy this sport at neighboring ski areas in the North Carolina mountains during the winter season.
