Camp Nihan Environmental Education Camp, MA

Description

Camp Nihan Education Camp is an ideal facility for group camping, hiking and exploring the nearby historic sites of Saugus and Boston. The facility encompasses sixty five acres of woodland forest, marsh, and a spring fed pond. The Saugus River flows through the camp property providing ideal habitats for animals such as heron and mallards. A variety of mammals reside in and around the area, including fox, deer and river otter. Campers also can hike to nearby Breakhart Reservation for swimming, hiking, and Visitor Center services.

Cabins have bunkbeds and tables, and accommodate 10-12 campers. Linens and eating utensils are not provided. No additional tents on cabin sites. Cabins have a refrigerator and are heated by pellet stove.

IMPORTANT: MA State Parks prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of MA State Park Campground facilities. Arriving customers must get their firewood at the campground. Firewood is available for $5.00 per bundle. Pricing may vary at campgrounds with camp stores. Transportation of firewood into or out of MA State Park Campground facilities may result in eviction, or substantial fine, or both.

Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts State Parks and Campgrounds.

The reservation must be in the name of the primary occupant.

To insure fairness for all MA customers, any reservation with departure dates outside the 6-month Maximum Window cannot be changed or canceled until 18 days after the reservation was made.

If you choose to cancel or change your reservation, a $10.00 fee will be charged. The reservation transaction charge is non-refundable.

Cancellations made on the day of arrival must be made by contacting the campground and will result in the loss of the first night's camping use fee plus the $10.00 cancellation fee. Fees will be deducted from any refunds due or will be added to future reservations. Refunds of $5.00 or less cannot be processed. If you leave early, please check-out at the contact station.

If you are unable to arrive on your scheduled arrival date, you must call the campground. Failure to contact the park by 8:00 A.M. the morning following your scheduled arrival date may result in your campsite being reassigned to another camper and forfeiture of all fees paid.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all our campers:
  • Camp Nihan is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday only September through June.
  • Camp Nihan is open Friday, Saturday only in July and August.
  • Contact Station Hours are 10:00 A.M. to 8:30 P.M. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
  • Camp Nihan offers group cabins and group tent sites. Each group cabin or group tentsite must have an adult and/or counselor in attendance.
  • Pets are prohibited from Camp Nihan, designated beach areas, Boston Harbor Islands, and all yurts and cabin camping.
  • Swimming is not permitted at Camp Nihan.
  • No biking or mountain biking at Camp Nihan.
  • Check-in Time is 1:00 P.M.; Check-out time is 11:00 A.M. Friday checkin time is 5:00 P.M. during July and August.
  • Quiet hours are 10:00 P.M. to 7:00 A.M.
  • No showers or flush toilets available, portable toilets only.
  • Potable water is available at the side of Sprague Lodge, and seasonally at the side of the Clarke Cabin. However, it is recommended that visitors bring one gallon of fresh water per person per day.
  • No open flame cooking inside cabins or on the decks of cabins. Campers may use the campfire area assigned to their cabin.
  • Cabins offer access to electricity, however, electric wattage is limited and does not accommodate a heater. Electrical service is not sufficiently reliable for use with medical devices and equipment.

Getting There:

From Route 1 in Saugus, take Route 129 West, Walnut Street toward city of Wakefield. The entrance to the Camp will be on your left 2/10ths of a mile after the first traffic light. Look for a small green sign. Continue on the gravel road and park in the first parking lot or as instructed by DCR staff. Please drive slowly.

From Route 129 take Route 1 South, Boston Exit and then follow the directions for Route 1 above.
