Description

Located on Madeline Island, Big Bay State Park features picturesque sandstone bluffs and 3.5 miles of Lake Superior shoreline. The park also has a boardwalk.

Alerts and Important Information

Big Bay State Park is open year round. Since the park is located on an island, it is accessible only by boat or by ice. Complete Madeline Island Ferry Line fees and schedule can be accessed at: www.MadFerry.com.

During winter, recorded Ice Road conditions and Windsled information can be heard at: 715-747-5400. Bon voyage. No out of state firewood is allowed. Wisconsin firewood from more than twenty-five miles outside any Wisconsin State Parks and Forest property will not be allowed to be brought onto the property.


Please buy firewood nearby or at the property you are going to. Campers may also call the DNR toll-free Firewood Hotline 1-877-303-WOOD (9663) for information before packing up for a trip. No fires allowed on beach. Pets are not allowed on beach or on Boardwalk. Current Madeline Island Ferry Line fees and schedule can be accessed on the Internet at: www.MadFerry.com.

The park is open for camping all year round. Reservations can be made up to 11 months ahead of time. Most campsites are reservable for camping on April 15th through November 1st. Reservations are highly recommended for 3 different periods of the year: (1) Memorial Day Weekend, (2) mid-June through Labor Day, (3) Bayfield's Apple Fest (early October).

Getting There:

Big Bay State Park is located on Madeline Island.
You must catch a ferry from Bayfield. The ferries run every 30 minutes during the busiest months. Ferry schedule & costs can be found at the Madeline Island Ferry Line Website www.madferry.com. No reservations are needed for the ferry, but are recommended for camping.

The park is 6 miles out of town from the ferry landing. You will drive off the dock and turn right. Go two blocks through town. Turn left at the gas station, and head out of town. Signs will help lead you to the park.
