Description

The Caribbean-blue waters of Bear Lake are nestled high in the Rocky Mountains at the Utah-Idaho border. Three state-owned facilities provide boating access, and camping and day-use opportunities.

Geography:

Bear Lake was formed 28,000 years ago by earthquake activity. At an elevation of 5,923 feet, Bear Lake is 20 miles long and eight miles wide, 208 feet deep, and covers 112 square miles.

Originally Bear Lake was called Black Bear Lake by Donald Mackenzie, explorer for the North West Fur Company who discovered it in 1819 while scouting for fur-bearing animals. The name was later changed to Bear Lake. Two Mountain Man Rendezvous were held in the area in the mid 1820's.

WHY IS IT SO BLUE? Its beautiful and unique green-blue color is the result of calcium carbonates suspended in the lake.

Recreation:

Waterskiing, swimming, scuba diving, and sailing are favorite activities. Anglers enjoy fishing for cutthroat, mackinaw and whitefish. Winter draws snowmobilers, ice anglers, and eagle watchers.

Facilities:

Rendezvous Beach is located on the south shore near Laketown on State Route 30. Rendezvous Beach includes the Willow (3) and Big Creek (1) group-use areas, and the Cottonwood (37), Birch(60) and Big Creek (46) campgrounds. All campgrounds provide modern restrooms and hot showers, and Birch and Big Creek campsites offer utility hookups. A wide, sandy beach is popular with groups. A local concessionaire provides boat rentals.

The park's Eastside areas provide four primitive campgrounds at South Eden (20), Cisco Beach (56), Rainbow Cove (13), and North Eden (10), along with boat ramps First Point, Cisco Beach, and Rainbow Cove. South Eden also has two group areas. Activities include scuba diving, boating, and fishing. Drinking water is available nearby at the South Eden Campground. The South Eden campsites can be reserved. All other Eastside campsites are first-come, first-served.

Bear Lake Marina on the west shore, offers a seven-lane launch ramp, a group day-use pavilion, a vessel pump-out, overnight boat slip rentals (20), and a local concessionaire provides boat rental, boating and fishing supplies, and a small cafe/grill.

** OHV RIDING IS NOT ALLOWED ANYWHERE IN THIS PARK. ** Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times and must not be left unattended. Dogs are allowed in the campgrounds, but not on the beach areas. ** Quiet hours from 10:00 P.M. through 7:00 A.M. ** Discharge of firearms or use of fireworks not allowed in the park. ** ADDITIONAL VEHICLES MUST FIT IN SITE AND ARE COLLECTED FOR UPON ARRIVAL. Getting There:

Marina: Through Logan, Utah: Take Interstate 15 north to US Highway 89-91 north to Logan. Stay on US Highway 89 to Garden City. Turn left on Highway 89 at 1 mile north of US Highway 89 and Utah State Road 30 Junction.

Through Evanston, Wyoming: Take Wyoming State Road 89/Utah State Road 16 north to Sage Creek Junction. Turn left on State Road 30 and follow until US Highway 89 and Utah State Road 30 Junction. Follow US Highway 89 1 mile past US Highway 89 and Utah State Road 30 Junction.

Rendezvous Beach: From Salt Lake City: Take Interstate 15 north to US Highway 89/91. Follow US Highway 89/91 north to Logan. Stay on US Highway 89 to Garden City. Turn right on Utah State Road 30 heading south and proceed 10 miles.

From Evanston: Take Wyoming State Road 89/Utah State Road 16 north to Sage Creek Junction with Utah State Road 30. Turn left on Utah State Road 30 heading west and proceed 12 miles.

Bear Lake Eastside Located on Cisco Road from bewtween four miles (First Point) to twelve miles north of Utah State Road 30 and Cisco Road Junction in Laketown.
