Description

The recent historic parkway improvement project has finished. The historic parkway, known as Rockwell Road, traverses Mt. Greylock and will reoopen by May 29, 2009. After May 2009, visitors will be able to reach Mt. Greylock's summit by vehicle. The Mt. Greylock primitive camping area is a car free zone. The Mt. Greylock primitive camping area can be reached by a 2.5 mile strenous hike up the mountain from Hopper Road Trail Head. However, after May 29, 2009 the camping area may also be reached by a 1.3 mile moderate hike from the campground parking lot located half way up the mountain off of Rockwell Road.

At 3,491 feet, Mt. Greylock is the highest peak in Massachusetts. Acquired by the Commonwealth in 1898, it was Massachusetts' first state park. For years, Mt. This 15 site campground offers a primitive, car free environment with great access to spectacular views and a rare alpine environment.

No water is available. Bring 1 gallon of water per person per day or a filter system. There is limited park staff. Cell phone service at the campground is unreliable. There is no public phone at the campground. Public phones are available 2.5 miles down the mountain at the Hopper Road trailhead, or 6 miles down at the Visitor Center. Reservations are required. A transaction fee of $9.25 will be applied to your reservation. The campsite fee is $8.00 or $10.00 per night for single tent site that will accommodate 4 adults or one family. $25.00 per night for a group site (12 people max). Cancellation and transfer fees apply.

The reservation must be in the name of the primary occupant.
