If you arrive at the park with equipment larger than the site maximums and contrary to what is indicated on your reservation you will be turned away from the park and applicable cancellation fees applied.

Description

Occoneechee State Park is on Virginia's largest lake, Buggs Island Lake, also known as John H. Kerr Reservoir. The park features 3.1 miles of walking trails which allow the guest to experience the history of the Occoneechee Indians and plantation life in the 1800s.

The Commonwealth of Virginia began leasing the land for outdoor recreational use from the U.S. Army in 1944. Occoneechee State Park's land remains leased from the Army Corps of Engineers.

Size: 2698 acres.

Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Reservoir), 48,000 acres. The Panhandle area is 1,900 acres, and is open for hunting, hiking, biking and nature observation.

Notice for Campers

LEAVE YOUR FIREWOOD AT HOME!!
A firewood quarantine has been established for the following localities: counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Louden, and Prince William; and the entire cities of Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. It is unlawful to transport firewood from these localities. In general, firewood can harbor insect pests under the bark and in the wood. The transport of infested firewood has been identified as a leading cause in the introduction of harmful forest insects into un-infested forest areas. Help us keep our state parks pest free by leaving your firewood at home.

  • Pursuant to Code of Virginia, no fire of any sort is permitted, including charcoal, between February 15 and April 30, except between the hours of 4PM to midnight. This includes campgrounds and picnic area / cabin grills. Camping stoves that are self-contained are permitted (ex. Coleman Stove). from Feb 15 2010 to Apr 30 2010
