Description

Breathtaking mountain views, access to the Appalachian Trail, and facilities for horse camping make this park a great destination. Mountain streams offer superb trout fishing opportunities. The park has access to the highest point in Virginia), a part of Jefferson National Forest. Grayson Highlands State Park was originally named Mount Rogers State Park and was established in 1965.

Grayson Highlands encompasses 4,822 acres. Various elevation: Entrance - 3,698 feet; Visitor Center - 4,953 feet; Little Pinnacle - 5,089 feet.

LEAVE YOUR FIREWOOD AT HOME!!
A firewood quarantine has been established for the following localities: counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Louden, and Prince William; and the entire cities of Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. It is unlawful to transport firewood from these localities. In general, firewood can harbor insect pests under the bark and in the wood. The transport of infested firewood has been identified as a leading cause in the introduction of harmful forest insects into un-infested forest areas. Help us keep our state parks pest free by leaving your firewood at home.

The park is on U.S. 58 midway between Independence and Damascus and is reached from I-81 at Exit 45 in Marion; turn south on Route 16 and travel 33 miles to U.S. 58 in the community of Volney. Turn right onto U.S. 58. Travel eight miles to the park's entrance. From I-77, take Hillsville Exit 14 to U.S. 58. Travel west on U.S. 58, 40 miles to Volney. Turn left to stay on U.S. 58 and go eight miles to the park entrance.

Limited water supply to well pump; the hot temperatures in urban areas are causing more visitation in the cool mountains and water reserves are diminishing. Cold showers only beginning 8/06/08; park is hoping to keep flushing toilets; it is not known when the situation when improve, and if situation worsens, park may resort to nonflushing/vault toilets. If your trip depends on full service bathhouses, we suggest you postpone your trip to May 2009, as park goes to primitive conditions for camping by Oct 1st annually anyway. from Aug 09 2008 to Oct 01 2008

Pursuant to Code of Virginia, no fire of any sort is permitted, including charcoal, between February 15 and April 30, except between the hours of 4PM to midnight. This includes campgrounds and picnic area / cabin grills. Camping stoves that are self-contained are permitted (ex. Coleman Stove). from Feb 15 2010 to Apr 30 2010
