CLAYTOR LAKE STATE PARK, VA

Description

Located on the 4,500 acre, 21 mile long Claytor Lake (from which the park was named) in the New River Valley of southwestern Virginia, Claytor Lake State Park offers a wide variety of activities for water and land enthusiasts. Easily accessible from Interstate 81, the park features the only full service marina in the state park system. In addition, there are miles of hiking trails, swimming, camping facilities, cabins and a visitor center. The visitor center is located in the historic Howe House. The lake and the park are named after Graham Claytor (1886-1971), who was vice president of Appalachian Power and supervised construction of the dam.

Claytor Lake State Park covers 472 acres. Lake size, 4,500 acres; 21 miles long. The park has approximately three miles of lake frontage.

Notice for Campers

LEAVE YOUR FIREWOOD AT HOME!!
A firewood quarantine has been established for the following localities: counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Louden, and Prince William; and the entire cities of Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. It is unlawful to transport firewood from these localities. In general, firewood can harbor insect pests under the bark and in the wood. The transport of infested firewood has been identified as a leading cause in the introduction of harmful forest insects into un-infested forest areas. Help us keep our state parks pest free by leaving your firewood at home.

    The events listed here are not intended to be an all inclusive list. Please contact the park for further details.

  • Between Aug 14 to Labor Day each year, many of our parks that offer swimming may experience a shortage of qualified lifeguards, resulting in swimming being available on Saturdays and Sundays only (closed Monday-Friday). Swimming is available Saturdays and Sundays. If your park trip depends on swimming daily, we advise you to reserve at another time. We apologize for the inconvenience.   • Lifeguard Shortage on Aug 26 2009
  • Pursuant to Code of Virginia, no fire of any sort is permitted, including charcoal, between February 15 and April 30, except between the hours of 4PM to midnight. This includes campgrounds and picnic area / cabin grills. Camping stoves that are self-contained are permitted (ex. Coleman Stove). from Feb 15 2010 to Apr 30 2010
