TWIN LAKES CABIN (AK), AKDescriptionClick here for more cabin information and maps. Built in 1963, this 16' x 16' A-frame cabin has a sleeping capacity of 7 people, with 2 single bunks (1 with trundle) and a second floor loft. The cabin also has a table and benches, oil stove (#1 oil ONLY), broom, and an outhouse. There is a partially covered front porch with a built-in bench and a wooden cooler box for food storage. There is no phone access. The cabin has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, #1 stove oil, and food. The cabin faces Limb Island and the upper end of Hooligan Slough. Depending on the river level, there is a sand beach between the riverbank and the slough. The trees around the cabin are primarily Sitka spruce, cottonwood, alder, and willow. The vegetation in front of the cabin is mostly grass, with meadows nearby. Brown and black bear, and moose inhabit the area. Mountain goats may be seen on the nearby mountains. The immediate area around the cabin is relatively flat, with steep mountains rising from behind Figure Eight Lake, known locally as Twin Lakes. Twin Lakes and the Twin Lakes picnic site are about 400 feet behind the cabin. The entrance to the lakes becomes restricted at lower river levels.Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone. Services & Amenities:Alerts and Important InformationReservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat drinking water before consumption. Pack out all garbage. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, oil stove for heat, & an outhouse. It does not have cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, #1 stove oil, and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. Tides and river level affect access to this cabin. Please consult local tide table and river level when planning your trip. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal. Getting There:Twin Lakes Cabin (AK)P.O. BOX 51 Wrangell AK 99929 GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude): 56.6975, -132.26722 Located on the north side of the Stikine River near Figure Eight Lake (Twin Lakes), in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. The cabin is 17 miles from Wrangell, accessible by shallow draft boat or floatplane during moderate to high river levels. A minimum 16' river level is generally needed for floatplane landings. The river level at the Shakes Gage is posted online at www.usgs.gov. Low river levels limit small boat access as Hooligan Slough becomes shallow or blocked. Tides may affect access; consult local tide tables. A tide of 14' or higher tide is required for a shallow draft boat to cross the tide flats. The river is normally ice-free May to October.
