SPRUCE MTN FIRE LOOKOUT TOWER (WY), WY

Description

Formerly used to detect fires, the live-in Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout Tower rises 55 feet above a forested mountaintop in the Medicine Bow- Routt National Forests. The tower was renovated and opened to the public for overnight rental in 1977 under the Granger-Thye Act.

The tower is at an elevation of 10,003 feet and visitors should be prepared for high altitude conditions. Summertime temperatures Average 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but can drop as low as 30 degrees at night or during thunderstorms. The tower is equipped with propane refrigerator, stove, and oven, heater, and lamps. There are two single beds, a table, and four chairs. A hoist (pulley and rope) for gear, broom and dustpan, manual for operating lights and stove, and a historic fire-finder are provided. The pit toilet is on the ground level.

Alerts and Important Information

Reservations must be made at least 3 days in advance. Reservations only. No first come-first serve stays available.

  • Please bring your own water for drinking, cooking, and washing.
  • Saddle and pack stock must be kept at least 500 feet from the base of the tower.
  • Hay brought must be certified weed-free or processed feed.
  • No alcohol, smoking, drugs, fireworks, or firearms in or around the tower.
  • Additional camping is allowed on the site, with a total of 10 occupants at the site.
  • Maximum of 4 persons, including at least one adult over 21 allowed in tower.

The cabin is 55 feet above ground level, visitors to the tower do so at their own risk. Safety rules must be followed.

From Laramie, WY, take Highway 130 west toward Centennial, WY. Turn south on Hwy 11 through Albany, Wyoming. Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout Tower is located seven miles west of Albany on Forest Road #500, a well- gravelled road accessible by two-wheel-drive vehicles.
