PETERSBURG LAKE CABIN (AK), AK

The Petersburg Lake cabin is located on Kupreanof Island, 9 miles northwest of Petersburg, in the Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness. This is not the Peterson Lake Cabin near Juneau. The Petersburg Creek Valley is a glacial valley with a broad, flat bottom and steep sides. The area surrounding the lake and creek is flat, otherwise the terrain is steep. The setting is pristine, old-growth spruce and hemlock forest with scattered muskeg. The area abounds with wildlife and wildflowers. The creek and lake are a haven for black bears and eagles, who feed on the spawning salmon. This pan-abode style cabin was constructed in 2003. It has two bunk beds with double space below and single above. The cabin is equipped with a woodstove only, wood is provided but not guaranteed.There is no oil stove. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cooking gear and food. Firewood is generally provided but is not guaranteed. For more information on the Petersburg Lake Cabin, call the Petersburg Ranger District at 907-772-3871. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Reservations can be made the day of arrival or up to 180 days in advance. The maximum length of stay is 7 consecutive days between May and September, and 10 consecutive days October through April. Boil or treat all water before drinking. Pack out all garbage. This pan-abode style cabin was constructed in 2003. It has two bunk beds with double space below and single above. The cabin is equipped with a woodstove only, wood is provided but not guaranteed. There is no oil stove. Cabin users who intend to use the skiff should bring a personal flotation device, and may also choose to bring a small outboard motor. Poor flying weather can occasionally result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. In fall, winter, and early spring, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface (floatplanes cannot land). Please contact the Petersburg Ranger District office for information prior to making any reservations during these periods. There are NO discounts for Golden Age and Golden Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. The person holding the reservation must be 18 and must be a member of the party using the cabin. All garbage and food must be packed out.

The cabin is accessible by floatplane 9 miles from Petersburg, or by a boat-trail combination dependent on tides. At high tide (15' or higher), access by boating 4 miles up Petersburg Creek to the high tide trailhead, then hike 6.5 miles along the Petersburg Creek Trail. At lower tides, go 0.5 mile to the low tide trailhead at the City of Kupreanof's boat dock on the Wrangell Narrows. The hike from this trailhead is 10.3 miles. Refer to USGS topographic map Petersburg D-4. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal.
