FIREWOOD ALERT!: Leave Your Firewood At Home! We need your help to protect our forests! A firewood quarantine has been established for much of the state of Virginia. In general, firewood can harbor insect pests under the bark and in the wood. The transport of infested firewood has been identified as a leading cause in the introduction of harmful forest insects into un-infested forest areas. The best way to prevent a new infestation of these invasive pests is to get your firewood AFTER arrival. Help us keep our parks pest free by leaving your firewood at home!

Description

Nearest campground to Augusta, GA, Petersburg is the largest Corps of Engineers campground on J. Strom Thurmond Lake. Boasting 93 sites, most with water and 50-amp electrical service, this campground is open year round. Two swimming beaches, a fishing pier, a hiking trail, a pond, and a first-come-first-serve picnic shelter provide for plenty of recreation opportunities right in the campground. A boat ramp for campers gives access to the 70,000 surface acres of water of Thurmond Lake. Nearby Lake Springs Recreation Area offers group shelters, playgrounds, a three-lane launching ramp, and numerous beaches. Petersburg is 4 miles from the Thurmond Dam and Visitor Center.

Alerts and Important Information

Reservations must be made at least 2 days in advance. Campground gate closed at 10pm and opens at 7am. Maximum 4 vehicles per site. Scooters, ATV's and golf carts are prohibited. Persons with disabilites may make special arrangements at the Visitor's Center. No alcohol. Visitor hours end at 9:30. Check-in time is 3pm and check-out time is 2pm. Late check-out may result in the charge of an additional night's camping fee. If you donot arrive within 24 hrs of checkin time and date you will be charged one night use fees plus $20.00.
Think Water Safety! Visitors are encouraged to wear life jackets at all times while on or around the water. Swimmers should use designated swim areas and never swim alone.

From I-20, take exit 183 (Appling). Go north on Hwy 221 approximately 6 miles. At four-way stop go straight (Hwy 221) another 2 miles. Campground road is on left. Follow signs.
