LOON LAKE CHALET (CA), CADescriptionLocated at an elevation of 6,348 feet, this chalet is nestled in the granite bowls and lodgepole red fir forest surrounding Loon Lake. The chalet has excellent views of the Sierras and the Lake. The chalet is open to the public weekends and holidays in the winter from 9am to 3pm. Rental on winter weekends is from 3pm to 8:30 am. There is a sleeping loft on the third floor that is part of the rental and not open to the public. A Ranger is in residence on duty, staying in the patrol room on the bottom floor. The chalet has electric heat, lights, and stove. There is a propane fireplace for comfort. The kitchen has a range, hot and cold water, sink, microwave, refrigerator, small dryer, and coffee pot. There are 12 sleeping mats available, but the complete facility can fit up to 20 people. Furniture includes a seating area made up of a queen-size futon couch and Adirondack couches facing the fireplace, tables, and benches. Outside there is a large deck with tables, and benches.There is summer motorcycling and four-wheel driving. The chalet is the center of the Loon Lake Winter Recreation Area which has multiple backcountry ski trails. Alerts and Important InformationReservations must be made at least 4 day in advance. Bring tire chains; roads may not be plowed on weekends and holidays. Renters MUST contact the Pacific Ranger Station at least 7 days in advance of arrival date at 530-647-5415, to arrange access, check-in and for current conditions.. No refunds for bad weather unless Ice House Road is not passable. Pets or dogs are NOT allowed in Loon Lake Chalet. (Latitude, Longitude): 38.98333, -120.32083 Highway 50 east of Placerville 21 miles, turn left on Ice House Road. Go 25 miles north to fork in road.
