HARDING RIVER CABIN (AK), AK

Description: Built in 1978, this 14'x16' hunter-style cabin sleeps 6 people with 2 single and 2 double bunks. The cabin also has a table and benches, an oil stove for heat (#1 oil ONLY), broom, and an outhouse. The partially covered front porch has a bear-proof storage locker. The cabin has no phone access, and no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, food, and #1 stove oil. Proximity: The surrounding rainforest is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock with scattered cedar. The immediate area around the cabin is relatively flat. Muskeg is also common in the area. The cabin overlooks the Harding River and the Bradfield Canal. Fish: Cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden (May-September), steelhead (April-May), and silver chum salmon (August-September) in the Harding River. Crabbing in the nearby Bradfield Canal. Wildlife: Brown and black bear, and waterfowl at Eagle and Bradfield River's tidal flats.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Reservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat drinking water prior to consumption. Pack out all garbage. Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, oil stove for heat, & an outhouse. It does not have cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, #1 stove oil, and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals.

Located southeast of Wrangell on the mainland at the mouth of the Harding River, which is on the north side of the Bradfield Canal. Distance is 31 miles by air, 40 miles by boat from Wrangell. The beach near the cabin slopes gradually and does not provide for easy boat anchoring. Recommend anchoring boat in deeper water and using skiff or punt between boat and shore.
