Description: Built in 1982, this 14'x 16' hunter-style cabin has a sleeping capacity of 6 people with 2 single bunks, 2 double bunks, tables and benches, broom, oil stove (#1 oil ONLY), and an outhouse. A half-loft provides storage area for additional items. A small deck wraps around 2 sides of the cabin. A cooler box for food storage is attached to the cabin. The cabin has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, food, and #1 stove oil. There is no phone access. Proximity: The cabin is located among spruce trees on a low rock outcrop at the transition zone between tide flats and a spruce-hemlock forest. The surrounding terrain is relatively flat with grass and shrubs growing on the tide flats. Wildflowers are prominent in May and June. Wildlife: Brown and black bear, moose, and seasonal waterfowl. The Stikine River tide flats are a major stopover spot during spring and fall bird migrations.Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone. (Latitude, Longitude): 56.61222, -132.49083 The Gut Island Cabins are located on Gut Island, adjacent to the western tip of Farm Island on the Stikine River delta in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. The cabin is 12 miles by floatplane or shallow draft boat from Wrangell, or 7 miles from the boat ramp on the south end of Mitkof Island. Tides affect access to this cabin. Boat access generally requires a tide of 15', while planes require a tide of 17' or higher, plus a short walk to the cabin. Please consult local tide tables.
