GRIZZLY CREEK GUARD STATION (CO), CO

Description

Historic Grizzly Creek Guard Station sleeps 5. It has 2 rooms, a heater, stove/oven and a refrigerator powered by natural gas. Water must be hauled from campground about 1/4 mile away during the summer and brought in by the visitor during the winter. No trash pickup, electricity or indoor plumbing.

Walden CO, a very small full service community of about 800 people, is a 30 minute drive from the Guard Station. Steamboat Springs CO, is 45 - 60 minutes away over a mountain pass; elevation about 8500'. The cabin sits in an open grassland/sagebrush park, with aspen forests across the gravel road and lodgepole pine forests nearby. Trailheads leading to hiking and horseback riding trails, are an easy drive from the Guard Station. The Grizzly Creek Guard Station is ADA accessible.

Summer: deer, woodpeckers and small mammals can often be seen from the guard station. Moose and elk are sometimes seen, and cattle frequently pass by the area.

Winter: snowmobiling and cross-country skiing is popular around here. You can leave from the cabin for these activities. Lots of snow for wintertime play. Snowmobile and cross-country ski vehicle traffic goes right by the cabin in daylight hours.

Visitors to National Forest are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations of the forest. Alerts and Important Information

This facility will be closed February 7 to April 15, 2008 due to inaccessibility

High elevation (8500'); drink lots of water before getting there to avoid altitude sickness. You must haul water to Guard Station in summer either from home or there is a campground nearby with a water supply. In the winter water is not available and you must bring water from home.

  • Be prepared and haul out your trash and leave the place cleaner than how you found it.
  • No electricity or indoor plumbing.
  • No Pets allowed.
  • No Smoking allowed.
  • There are no lights provided in this cabin; you must bring some kind of light sources such as a flashlight or lantern.

You must call the Parks Ranger District Office in Walden advance to obtain the combination to the lock to get in the cabin. Rembember the office is not open weekends and evenings so plan accordingly! The Parks Ranger District Office phone number is 970-723-820.

From Walden CO: Highway 14 south toward Steamboat Springs 12 miles, turn west on Country Rd 24 and go 12 miles to Routt National Forest Boundary. Grizzly Creek Guard Station is on your left as you enter the forest.

From Steamboat Springs CO: highway 40 east toward Kremmling 15 miles; turn north on highway 14 toward Walden CO 20 miles; turn west on country road 24 and drive 12 miles to Routt National Forest Boundary. The Station is on your left.

From Granby CO: take highway 40/125 west/north toward Walden and Kremmling; turn north on highway 125 toward Walden and continue on to the junction with highway 14 south to Steamboat Springs (about 55-60 miles); take highway 14 south toward Steamboat Springs for about 12 miles, turn west (right) on Country Road 24 and drive about 12 miles to Routt National Forest Boundary. Grizzly Creek Guard Station is on your left as you enter the forest.
