CASTLE FLATS CABIN (AK), AK

Proximity: The surrounding terrain is predominantly flat, old-growth forest and muskeg. The nearest water source is a small stream west of the cabin. An easy one mile trail leads to the Castle River Cabin (1/2 mile) and continues upstream another 1/2 mile. Description: The Castle Flats Cabin is a hunter-style cabin equipped with four single wooden bunks, table, benches, wood stove and oil stove for heat, covered porch, rowboat, and an outhouse. It is located on Kupreanof Island, on the edge of the Castle River tide flat in Duncan Canal. It is accessible by boat and floatplane only. From Petersburg, it is 16 miles by floatplane or 30 miles by boat. Activities: Fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, boating, hunting. Wildlife: Moose, deer, black bear, waterfowl, grouse. Fish: Steelhead (April - May), trout (May to October), Coho Salmon (mid August - mid September). For more information on the Castle Flats Cabin, call the Petersburg Ranger District at 907-772-3871.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Same day reservations are allowed for this cabin. Maximum length of stay is 7 consecutive days between May and September and 10 consecutive days October through April. The person holding the reservation must be at least 18 years of age, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. The Castle Flats Cabin does not have a cook stove, mattresses, or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, and food. Bring #1 heating oil for the oil heater. Cabin users who intend to use the rowboat provided should bring a personal flotation device, and may also choose to bring a small outboard motor. Firewood is generally provided but is not guaranteed. A broom, dust pan, axe, and splitting maul are generally provided, but may be missing or damaged. Please report missing or damaged items to the Petersburg Ranger District. All drinking water should be boiled or treated. All garbage and food must be packed out. Poor weather can occasionally delay boat or floatplane travel, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Tides affect access to this cabin. Consult local tide tables before you make a reservation.

The Castle Flats Cabin is located on Kupreanof Island, on the edge of the Castle River tide flat in Duncan Canal. It is accessible by boat or floatplane only. From Petersburg, Alaska, it is 16 miles by floatplane or 30 miles by boat. A 15' tide is required for floatplane access, and a 13' tide is required for boat access.
