BERG BAY CABIN (AK), AK

Description: Built in 1965, this 16' x 16' A-frame cabin sleeps 7 people with 2 single bunks (1 with trundle) and a second floor loft. The cabin also has a table and benches, fire grill, mooring float, oil space heater (#1 oil ONLY), broom, and an outhouse. The partially covered front porch has a wooden cooler box for food storage. The cabin has no phone access, and no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, food, and #1 stove oil. Proximity: The cabin overlooks Berg Bay and Blake Channel. The immediate area in front of the cabin is a gentle slope leading to the bay. The surrounding rainforest is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock with scattered cedar and muskeg. The nearby Aaron Creek tide flats have extensive grass sedges and wildflowers. Slopes in the immediate area of the cabin are gentle but become steep in the surrounding area. Wildlife: Brown and black bear, moose, mountain goat on surrounding ridges, and waterfowl. Fish: Pink salmon (mid July-mid August), silver and chum salmon (Aug and Sept.), steelhead (Apr. and May) in nearby Aaron and Oerns Creek; crabbing opportunities in Berg Bay and in front of Aaron Creek tidal flats.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Reservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat drinking water before consumption. Pack out all garbage and food. Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, oil stove for heat & an outhouse. It does not have cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, #1 stove oil, and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals.

This cabin is located on the mainland along the north shore of Berg Bay, east of Blake Channel and near the mouth of Aaron Creek. The cabin is accessible by boat (22 miles) or by floatplane (15 miles) from Wrangell. There is a 25 foot mooring float anchored in the bay for use by cabin permittees only.
